A constructive approach for the generation of underwater environments

    Get PDF
This paper introduces Coralize, a library of generators for marine organisms such as corals and sponges. Using constructive algorithms, Coralize can generate stony corals via L-system grammars, soft corals via leaf venation algorithms and sponges via nutrient-based mesh growth. The generative algorithms are parameterizable, allowing a user to adjust the parameters in order to create visually appealing 3D meshes. Such meshes can be used to automatically populate a seabed or reef, in order to create a biologically realistic and aesthetically pleasing underwater environment. The research was supported, in part, by the FP7 ICT projects C2Learn (project no: 318480) and ILearnRW (project no: 318803), and by the FP7 Marie Curie CIG project AutoGameDesign (project no: 630665).peer-reviewe

Increased Sensitivity to Possible Muonium to Antimuonium Conversion

    Get PDF
A new experimental search for muonium-antimuonium conversion was conducted at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen, Switzerland. The preliminary analysis yielded one event fulfilling all required criteria at an expected background of 1.7(2) events due to accidental coincidences. An upper limit for the conversion probability in 0.1 T magnetic field is extracted as 8⋅10−118 \cdot 10^{-11} (90% CL).Comment: 2 figure

Goal-Based Selection of Visual Representations for Big Data Analytics

    Get PDF
The H2020 TOREADOR Project adopts a model-driven architecture to streamline big data analytics and make it widely available to companies as a service. Our work in this context focuses on visualization, in particular on how to automate the translation of the visualization objectives declared by the user into a suitable visualization type. To this end we first define a visualization context based on seven prioritizable coordinates for assessing the user's objectives and describing the data to be visualized; then we propose a skyline-based technique for automatically translating a visualization context into a set of suitable visualization types. Finally, we evaluate our approach on a real use case excerpted from the pilot applications of TOREADOR

Evidence for a two component magnetic response in UPt3

    Get PDF
The magnetic response of the heavy fermion superconductor UPt_3 has been investigated on a microscopic scale by muon Knight shift studies. Two distinct and isotropic Knight shifts have been found for the field in the basal plane. While the volume fractions associated with the two Knight shifts are approximately equal at low and high temperatures, they show a dramatic and opposite temperature dependence around T_N. Our results are independent on the precise muon localization site. We conclude that UPt_3 is characterized by a two component magnetic response.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

ADAM8 in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck: a retrospective study

    Get PDF

Abstract

Background

A disintegrin and metalloproteinase (ADAMs) have been associated with multiple malignancies. ADAMs are involved in cell fusion, cell migration, membrane protein shedding and proteolysis. ADAM8 has been found to be overexpressed in squamous cell carcinomas of the lung. A new study showed that ADAM8 is significantly overexpressed in metastasis of squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck (HNSCC).

Methods

We determined ADAM8 levels in the serum of 79 HNSCC patients at the time of diagnosis, in 35 patients 3 months after treatment and in 10 patients 1 year after therapy and compared the results to the sera of 31 healthy volunteers. We also constructed tissue microarrays to detect ADAM8 immunohistochemically in 100 patients. The results were correlated with the survival data of the patients to determine the diagnostic and prognostic value.

Results

The data demonstrated that patients with high ADAM8 expression in the tumor have worse survival rates. We found that high ADAM8 serum levels correlated with high ADAM8 expression in tumor samples. Soluble ADAM8 levels did not show any prognostic or diagnostic properties.

Conclusion

In summary ADAM8 expression is a prognostic factor for survival of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.</p

The Muonium Atom as a Probe of Physics beyond the Standard Model

    Get PDF
The observed interactions between particles are not fully explained in the successful theoretical description of the standard model to date. Due to the close confinement of the bound state muonium (M=μ+e−M = \mu^+ e^-) can be used as an ideal probe of quantum electrodynamics and weak interaction and also for a search for additional interactions between leptons. Of special interest is the lepton number violating process of sponteanous conversion of muonium to antimuonium.Comment: 15 pages,6 figure

The Coralize tool for creating underwater environments

    Get PDF
This paper describes Coralize, a level design tool targeting the creation of underwater environments. The user inter- face allows a scene designer to customize the generative al- gorithms of different types of corals and sponges. Moreover, the designer can draw the generated corals onto the scene, following patterns found in real-world reefs.peer-reviewe

Abnormal ECG Findings in Athletes: Clinical Evaluation and Considerations.

    Get PDF
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pre-participation cardiovascular evaluation with electrocardiography is normal practice for most sporting bodies. Awareness about sudden cardiac death in athletes and recognizing how screening can help identify vulnerable athletes have empowered different sporting disciplines to invest in the wellbeing of their athletes. RECENT FINDINGS: Discerning physiological electrical alterations due to athletic training from those representing cardiac pathology may be challenging. The mode of investigation of affected athletes is dependent on the electrical anomaly and the disease(s) in question. This review will highlight specific pathological ECG patterns that warrant assessment and surveillance, together with an in-depth review of the recommended algorithm for evaluation

FLUTE, a linac based THz source

    Get PDF
We propose a versatile THz source named FLUTE (Ferninfrarot Linac- Und Test-Experiment) based on a 30 - 50 MeV S-band linac with bunch compressor, that aimsat not only producing high field THz pulses but also at serving as a test facility to study accelerator physics issues. This source is an important step towards the planned ultra-broadband THz to mid infrared user facility TBONE. Special emphasis is put on studies of bunch compression as a function of bunch charge (0.1-5 nC) and of different generation mechanisms of coherent radiation (CSR, CER, CTR). This paper describes the design and layout of the proposed FLUTE machine and presents results of beam dynamic calculations with the tracking programs ASTRA and CSRtrack. In addition, calculations for the achievable peak electrical field and spectral characteristics for one version of the FLUTE layout are shown
